BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst)

Definition

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a graduate-level professional credentialed by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) to design, oversee, and supervise ABA treatment programs. BCBAs are responsible for the clinical assessment, treatment planning, and supervision of RBTs and other behavior technicians.

The BCBA credential is the primary clinical credential in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. It requires a master's degree in behavior analysis or a related field, completion of BACB-approved coursework, a defined number of supervised experience hours, and passing the BCBA examination. The BACB also requires ongoing continuing education to maintain certification.

BCBAs are responsible for the full scope of clinical decision-making in ABA programs: conducting functional behavior assessments, writing behavior intervention plans, designing skill acquisition programs, analyzing session data, adjusting treatment approaches, and supervising the RBTs and BCaBAs who implement the programs directly with clients.

In most ABA clinic structures, BCBAs carry a caseload of 8–15 clients, with each client's program requiring regular data review, parent meetings, insurance authorization management, and documentation. The administrative burden on BCBAs is significant — data review, report writing, and authorization renewals can easily consume 30–40% of a BCBA's working hours.

In practice

A BCBA typically meets with each client for 1–2 hours per month for supervision and assessment, while RBTs deliver the direct therapy hours (20–40 hours/week for intensive programs). BCBAs review session data weekly or biweekly, adjust programs, write progress reports for insurance and parents, and train supervising staff.
