ABC Data (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence)

Definition

ABC data is a behavior observation method used in ABA therapy to record the antecedent (what happened before the behavior), the behavior itself, and the consequence (what happened after). It is used to identify the function — or purpose — of a problem behavior.

ABC data collection is a foundational tool in Applied Behavior Analysis for conducting informal functional assessments. By recording the context around a behavior, therapists and BCBAs can identify patterns that reveal why the behavior is occurring — whether the child is seeking attention, trying to escape a demand, accessing a preferred item, or responding to sensory stimulation.

The antecedent is anything that immediately preceded the behavior: a specific instruction given, a transition, a peer interaction, or a change in environment. The behavior is the observable action itself, described in concrete, measurable terms (not 'meltdown' but 'threw materials, hit table, screamed for >60 seconds'). The consequence is what immediately followed: did the demand get removed? Did the child receive attention? Was access to a preferred item given?

Over multiple observations, patterns emerge. If a behavior consistently follows a demand and results in demand removal, the function is likely escape. This directly informs the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) — teaching an alternative behavior that serves the same function.

In practice

Therapists log ABC data during or immediately after each incident. A session might include 2–5 ABC observations alongside skill acquisition data. Patterns are reviewed across sessions and shared with the supervising BCBA to inform assessment and intervention decisions.

Key facts

A = Antecedent: what happened immediately before the behavior

B = Behavior: the observable action, described in concrete terms

C = Consequence: what happened immediately after

Used to identify behavioral function: attention, escape, access, sensory

Informs the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

How Theralyn helps

Theralyn's session execution screen includes an ABC data section where therapists can log antecedents, behaviors, and consequences during or after each incident. All entries are compiled into the session report automatically.
